Joe Tiller era has ended in West Lafayette as Purdue's football hope to rebuild this spring. New coach Danny Hope will take over the reins after serving as associate head coach Tiller to last season. Hope has been an assistant at Oklahoma, Wyoming and Purdue. He served as offensive coordinator at Louisville before becoming head coach at Eastern Kentucky. He coached the Colonels until his return to Purdue last season.

Hope will big shoes to fill. While Tiller was poor last season, his career in general was one of the best in Purdue history. It is like the school's all-time winningest coach with 87 career victories. He led the Boilermakers to 10 bowl appearances in 12 seasons. Before his arrival, Purdue had only been Bowl 5 games in their history. But be eight seasons removed from its last conference title, fans and school administrators had become impatient with Tiller. In his last three seasons, had made a mediocre record of 20-19.

Purdue will have their hands full this season. Their conference schedule does not include games against Oregon and Notre Dame. The Big Ten schedule peculiar request did not jump at Purdue this season. They face Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Ohio State. The only team to qualify for the conference managed to avoid is Penn State.

All of this is not comforting news is coming off a 4-8 season, including 2-6 in the Big Ten. However, the Boilermakers are just a season removed from their last winning record and Bowl. Purdue won the Motor City Bowl in 2007 and lost the Champs Sports Bowl last year.

Dominating talk spring practice this season will be the competition for the starting quarterback job. Battling is Justin Siller and Joey Elliot. Siller is a 6'4 "sophomore from Detroit. Elliot is a 6'2" senior from Evansville, IN. Siller threw for 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in limited action last season. Elliot saw even less playing time, managing only 5 complete in 10 attempts.

Both players realize the importance of playing quarterback at Purdue. The NFL has had many callers with signal success to play Purdue on Sunday. Former Boilermaker QB's who are currently playing in the NFL include Drew Brees and Kyle Orton. Hall of Famer Len Dawson and Bob Griese played for Purdue. Other former NFL stars include Gary Danielson and Jim Everett.

One of the greatest challenges facing the Esperanza will be stepping up recruitment. The boilers have been ranked at or near the bottom of the Big Ten in recent seasons in recruiting. The class of 2009 ranks last in the Big Ten. To rebuild, Purdue must regain the state of Indiana and prevent the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State and pull top recruits.

No searching for a huge turn around this season for the Boilermakers. New technical Chief Danny Hope has her hands full and will need time to recruit new talent. You also need the help of his sporting director to put together a no less difficult conference schedule. Meanwhile, the Purdue football fans have to be patient. A victory over Indiana in the game of old oak Bucket can be one of the few things to celebrate in 2009.
