Should I get a puppy?

I am a student who lives in an apartment across dorms. The program is not affiliated with my school, but offers apartments for students. The apartment complex I live in dogs but allows the program I'm in the home through the student Dogs allowed. Its just a rule that up because they think they were 10 years of age. I really want a puppy. I've had dogs all my life and I do not want that to change. Im on the opposite coast my family and friends, and I think having a dog would make me a little happier. They come and inspect the apartment once every two months, but I have thought about taking the dog and bowls toys and dog and any trace of me during the day. They do not come without notice.
