Whereas fifteen years ago if he would buy a plane ticket that was to phone a travel agent these days all you need is filling out a simple online form. In fact, the sale of airline tickets has grown so much that dominates the South African e-commerce landscape, and is expected to continue to dominate over the next 5 to 10 years. However, e-commerce talents are not evenly distributed among the various players in the airline industry. The bright Kulula.com and bright stars are Travelstart, both of which have foreign interests – Kulula.com is partly owned by British Airways, and is owned Travelstart of a Swede.

Kulula.com

Kulula.com was the first South African consumer web site to reach R1-billion in online sales in one year (2005) – not a coincidence that even its name shows recognition of the importance of electronic commerce (the only airline in South Africa, which has a URL in your name).

Travelstart

In late 2004, Stephen Ekbergh, a rebellious Swedish businessman, moved his family to climate warmer than Cape Town. Ekbergh was the founder of Travelstart and moving to the mother city, started a South African version Travelstart brand. The South African version allows one to find the cheapest flight between (inter alia) Kulula.com, 1time, Mango Airlines and SAA (after experiencing "serious problems of the nation," decided to "turn to the national level after our systems). In a stroke of genius, Ekbergh has convinced many website owners of South Africa Travelstart promote their websites, making the search engine Travelstart available through an affiliate marketing company, Traffic Synergy. Owners website will receive a set fee (currently R80) for each ticket sold.

Affiliate marketing

Given the importance of the online industry for the sale of airline tickets, surprisingly Travelstart is one of the few players (the only?) involved in the aviation industry South African unleashed the power of affiliate marketing. Foreign airlines as KLM, British Airways, Air France, Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines all the use affiliate marketing to boost sales – the future is already here, it's just not evenly spread out. South African companies would do well to simply copy the online strategies of their foreign competitors.
